Reiterating an old
Feature
Although an entirely new feature for
the Platform, Snapchat has already delved into a similar concept with their
App’s presently available ‘Custom Stories’ feature. Custom Stories enables
Snapchat Users to Create Stories on the Snapchat Platform and then allows them
to add friends to view them and additionally, contribute to them. With the new
Shared Stories feature, Snapchat aims to completely expand this aforementioned
concept by allowing the Users the exact same benefits of the Custom Stories
feature, but on a much larger scale. In keeping with this vision, Snapchat’s Shared
Stories will reportedly make it much easier for Snapchat Users to add a large
number of group members that could view their Stories, labelled by Snapchat as
the feature “for the whole Soccer Team, Camp Squad, or a Group of Co-workers to
get in on the fun”. All this give
further weight to the fact that with Shared Stories, Snapchat will potentially
reel in a much larger audience-base, as the feature is designed around creating
an experience that will cater to large groups, in comparison to the prior
Custom Stories feature that was only targeting a smaller Consumer-base. Additionally,
Shared Stories also could empower the Snapchat Users to reach a wider array of
Viewers that they could before, thus allowing their Content to be better
recognition.
The Workings of ‘Shared
Story’
Shared Stories will be readily
accessible to all Users of Snapchat, similar to Custom Stories. Users will be
an able to start a Shared Story from their Profile, by tapping the New Story
Option and afterwards selecting the ‘Shared Story’ option. Akin to the Custom
Stories Feature, all Snaps sent to a Shared Story will also be automatically deleted
after 24 hours of it being up. However, as a departure to their Custom Stories
feature, there will not be a Chat Component with this Shared Stories feature.
This change brings along certain Privacy issues that Snapchat is actively
addressing. The Content will be moderated using a two different monitoring
tools, an Automatic Language Detector and a Community Review Tool.
Additionally, the Snapchat App itself will be capable of notifying the Users if
they have been added to a Shared Story with someone whom they have blocked. All
these features are designed to elevate Snapchat’s vision for greater User
Empowerment, stating that these new changes will bring about greater Control
for their Users with regards to who they share their Content with on the
Snapchat App.
