The Aesthetics of the
Device
Numerous reports have come out after
the Patent Leaks that have shed some light into the Design, Display and
Durability of a Foldable iPhone. Contradicting reports have come out regarding
the Company’ Foldable iPhone’s Display size, some indicate a Screen size of 7.5
inches, others claim Apple would be testing an 8-inch screen, making it larger
than Samsung’s most premium Foldable Product the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which comes
with a 7.6 display. While other reports have indicated that iPhone will dwarf
all other Foldable Phones in the Market by coming out with an 9-inch display.
In terms of the Design of the Foldable iPhone, reports state that Apple is
considering two different kinds of Designs: A Clamshell Flip Phone akin to the
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, and a Fold-out Phone similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold
lineup. Reports further dictate that the Company is leaning more towards
adopting the Clamshell Design for their Phone. With the inclusion of a Foldable
Screen, the Phone’s Durability is always put into question. With regards to
Apple’s patents, their Foldable Phone may come with an upgraded version of the
iPhone 12’s Ceramic Shield, specifically designed for foldable phones and
consisting of four different layers: a cover layer, a hard coat layer, an inner
surface layer and a support layer.
The Electronic Paper
Display
With these recent developments, another
report has stated that Apple is testing an Electronic Paper Display, in
cooperation with the Surface-developing Company E Ink for its future Foldable
iPhone. This would allow the Company to take advantage of E Ink’s exceptional
capabilities to develop a low-powered second screen for their Foldable Device. This
is possible because of one of E Ink’s biggest selling point which is their
Power Saving Capabilities. Apple expresses great interest in the future
potential of E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display, claiming that it could become
the mainstream solution for all of future Foldable Devices’ screens. For Apple,
the optimum use of E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display could be their Foldable
iPhone’s potential Cover Screen which could lead to less battery consumption
through the implementation of an E Ink Surface, since it would not consume that
much power for portraying mainly Static Content with a lower Refresh Rate.
The Foldable Phone
Market and Competition
As is public knowledge, Samsung seems
to have a head start compared to all other Mobile Phone Companies with respect
to a successful Foldable Phone device. Having now offered three versions of
their Foldable Devices the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung have
certainly reaped the benefits of this still adolescent market as reports
indicate that their recent generation of Z phone have sold very well. One of
the biggest reasons for their success could be their strong focus on offering
their Consumers these Premium Foldable Phones at a comparatively low price,
with the Galaxy Flip 3 being offered for less than $1000. Apart from Samsung,
Motorola and Google are actively trying to develop their very own Foldable
Devices, leaving Apple in a position of stiff competition by the time the
Company launches their own Foldable Phone.
